Do you know whether sunscreen is physical or chemical?

Sun protection has always been a common topic. Whether it is summer or all year round, sun protection products must be an indispensable product on many people's dressing tables. So do you know whether sunscreen is physical or chemical? Let’s take a look together!

Is sunscreen physical or chemical?

There are three types of sunscreen: physical sunscreen, chemical sunscreen, and a combination of physical and chemical sunscreen. Physical sunscreens have a relatively viscous texture, while chemical sunscreens are very refreshing and non-greasy. Physical sunscreens contain metal oxides, most of which are white, while chemical sunscreens are mostly colorless.

The difference between physical sunscreen and chemical sunscreen

The sunscreen ingredients of physical sunscreen are zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, etc., while the common sunscreen ingredients of chemical sunscreen are benzophenone, ethylhexyl salicylate, and octocrylene.

Chemical sunscreens are somewhat irritating to the skin and the effect is not long-lasting, so they need to be reapplied every once in a while. However, they are relatively light and thin, so they are suitable for non-allergic oily skin or combination skin. Physical sunscreen is safer for dry skin and sensitive skin.

How much sunscreen should I use at one time?

Generally, the amount used on the face is at least the size of a one-yuan coin, and the application amount is 2 mg per square centimeter. 2-2.5 grams should be applied to a pair of arms at a time, and 1-1.5 grams should be applied to the face at a time. So, a 50ml bottle of sunscreen, plus daily reapplication, should be used up in about a month in the summer, even if it is only used on the face.
