What are the causes of closed comedones?

I believe many beautiful girls know that acne can be divided into two types: open comedones and closed comedones. Generally speaking, when we say we have acne on our face, we are usually referring to open comedones. So, what are closed comedones? What are the causes of closed comedones?

What are closed comedones

Closed comedones have closed pores. In the early stage, it is a very small particle, usually no larger than 2mm, and it does not hurt, red, itchy or swollen, but you can feel it if you touch it with your hand. It usually takes about 5 months to reach the peak of growth, and finally it will either rupture and cause inflammatory acne, or turn into open acne.

What are the causes?

1. Staying up late often

Staying up late often will cause an imbalance in the hormone secretion in our body, and the disharmony between endocrine and metabolism, resulting in moisture loss in the skin, which in turn leads to the formation of closed comedones.

2. Skin is too dry

Our skin will metabolize slowly when it is very dry and lacks moisture, which slows down the production of new skin cells and causes old dead skin cells to not fall off normally and accumulate on the skin surface. The main reason for the formation of closed comedones is the combination of a too thick stratum corneum, abnormal keratinization and excessive secretion of sebaceous glands.

There are many reasons for the formation of closed comedones. It also has to do with your mood when it comes to eating. If you take good care of your skin in time, you won’t have to worry about closed comedones.

How are closed comedones formed?

1. Excessive secretion of sebaceous glands

When the sebum cannot be discharged in time, it will accumulate in the hair follicle duct, causing blockage of the pores and leading to the formation of closed pores.

2. Abnormal keratinization of keratinocytes at the mouth of hair follicles

The cells around the opening of our normal hair follicles will fall off regularly, so it will not block the exit and will maintain good normality. However, if the keratinization of the hair follicle opening is abnormal, the keratin does not fall off when it should or it keratinizes excessively, resulting in excessive thickness of the keratin which will block the hair follicle opening. The sebum secreted by the skin cannot be discharged, and congestion will gradually occur, eventually forming a closed opening.

3. Inadequate cleaning

If the cleaning is not done properly, especially after applying makeup, the hair follicles will be blocked, increasing the incidence of closed comedones.
