Symptoms of frostbite

Frostbite can be divided into three different degrees according to the duration and severity of symptoms.

Mild frostbite

Mild frostbite is usually the initial symptom, manifested by the appearance of purple-red or blue patches and nodules the size of a fingernail or a broad bean on the skin. Generally, the patches and nodules are blue-purple in the middle and purple-red at the edges. Moreover, the boundaries between plaques and nodules and other skin parts are not particularly clear. The surface looks relatively shiny, feels slightly raised, and has a cool feeling. If you press the skin on the plaque or nodule with your fingers, it will fade, but the color will return after you release your fingers. Some babies may also experience itching and burning sensations in the early stages of frostbite, which are all manifestations of mild frostbite.

Moderate frostbite

Moderate frostbite usually develops because the initial frostbite is not cured properly. The main manifestation is the growth of large blisters with obvious boundaries on the skin where there were originally erythema or nodules. The blisters contain light yellow or bloody liquid. After the blisters burst, the liquid will flow out, and then the blisters will naturally form scabs. The skin will begin to crack and even occasionally ooze fluid, which are symptoms of moderate frostbite.

Severe frostbite

Severe frostbite is mainly caused by the fact that the previous frostbite was not treated well, which leads to the aggravation of frostbite. The main manifestations are that on the basis of moderate frostbite, the skin begins to necrotize, ulcerate, pus discharge, etc., and may even be accompanied by occasional bleeding. These are all symptoms of severe frostbite.
