Precautions for skin care in haze days

As winter comes, the occasional smog makes it hard to breathe, and the gloomy weather makes people feel worse. Even the skin sends out alarms and various minor problems occur.

Effects of smog on the skin

When PM2.5 has become a well-known word, our first concern is naturally respiratory health issues. However, have you ever thought that the impact of haze is more than just the respiratory tract?

The skin is the first line of defense between our human body and the external environment. Its function is to fight against various harmful substances that invade our skin.

A German study shows that as PM2.5 increases, the aging index of the forehead and cheeks will increase by 20%. Although it is not certain what effect the PM2.5 concentration will have on the skin, it is certain that air pollution has a direct impact on accelerated skin aging, pigmentation, dermatitis or allergic skin diseases.

PM2.5 particles penetrate into the skin through the hair follicles, followed by a series of chemical reactions, which on the one hand cause DNA damage and collagen degradation leading to aging, and on the other hand damage the skin barrier. Once the skin barrier function is damaged, microorganisms attached to PM2.5 particles begin to multiply, inducing or aggravating inflammatory responses. This process in turn accelerates the penetration rate of PM2.5, forming a vicious cycle. In this case, how can we protect our skin and deal with skin problems caused by smog?

Skin care methods for haze days:

Simply put, there are two things to pay attention to when taking care of your skin on foggy days: one is cleaning, and the other is protection.

1. Cleaning

Daily cleaning is the most basic, simple and most effective first step. After a day's activities, dirt in the air will adhere to the surface of the skin, so we need to do the most basic cleaning to remove the dirty sebum film and allow the skin to secrete new oil to protect the skin.

To wash away the pollutants and microorganisms attached to the skin when going out every day, be sure to choose mild cleaning products. Don’t over-clean in pursuit of “the cleaner the better”, which will cause damage to the skin barrier and aggravate the damage of haze to the skin.

Another thing to note is that many people are used to washing their faces when taking a shower at night. In fact, on foggy days when the skin is seriously polluted, it is recommended to wash your face as soon as you get home to wash away the dirt. It is also better to use a milder and more natural facial cleanser.
