Squalane is also available from other plant oils. Most of the squalane used in cosmetics in the EU is plant squalane. The skin care effects of plant squalane and animal squalane are similar, but neither of them causes damage to marine ecological resources. Plant squalane is cheaper, but still relatively expensive overall.

Synthetic squalane: In order to meet the market demand for squalane and find cheaper raw materials, it is now possible to synthesize raw materials with similar properties to squalane through chemical synthesis, such as hydrogenated polyisobutylene. Hydrogenated polyisobutene is a synthetic polymer that has moisturizing, hydrating and lubricating effects. It has similar properties to natural squalane, but is much cheaper.
