Why does niacinamide make your skin darker the more you use it? The reason for darkening and the correct way to use it

Niacinamide is a common whitening ingredient and is found in many whitening products. However, some people find that their skin becomes darker the more they use niacinamide. What is going on?

Why does my skin get darker the more I use niacinamide?

If you don't do a good job of sun protection, even if you use niacinamide, your skin color will still become darker based on your previous skin color. No matter what whitening skin care product you use, the speed of whitening is slower than the speed of getting tanned, so if you want to become white, you must use sunscreen. Niacinamide is a super whitening ingredient. After using niacinamide, your skin can become whiter in a short time. It can promote facial metabolism, reduce the deposition of melanin, and make your skin whiter quickly. Whether you use niacinamide or not, you need to use sunscreen, even if you don't use any skin care or whitening products.

If you apply sunscreen every day, your skin will become whiter after a period of time.
What is the role of niacinamide in cosmetics?
(1) Act on the melanin that has already been produced and reduce its transfer to the surface cells because only when melanin is transferred to the keratinocytes will the skin appear darker. Niacinamide acts on the melanin that has already been produced, effectively inhibiting the transfer of about 35% to 40% of melanin from melanocytes to keratinocytes, thereby reducing excessive pigmentation. Clinical trials have shown that using a moisturizer containing niacinamide can significantly reduce the area and number of brown spots on the skin, and the lightening of the color of the spots can be seen with the naked eye.

(B) Accelerate metabolism and promote the shedding of keratinocytes containing melanin. Skin cells need sufficient energy to complete their daily physiological functions, such as: producing new cells, synthesizing collagen, producing fat and protein, synthesizing DNA, etc. Aging and other reasons often cause a decrease in the energy of cell activity, resulting in slower cell renewal, excessive pigmentation, reduced skin moisture, uneven cuticles, etc.
Because niacinamide has a small molecule, it can be directly absorbed by cells. Experiments have shown that niacinamide penetrates deeper into the skin within 120 minutes, and the longer the time is, the deeper it penetrates into the skin. Niacinamide can penetrate the waterproof layer of the skin's stratum corneum and directly act on the inner layer of the skin. According to clinical trials,

Applying appropriate amount of nicotinamide to the stratum corneum will form nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (coenzyme,) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (coenzyme,) in the body with ribose, phosphate and adenine, thereby increasing the generation of energy molecules to replenish cellular energy. This is because cellular energy can be transmitted through the epidermis of the stratum corneum to the connective tissue between the dermis, then to the fibers within the connective tissue, and then to the bottom layer of the cells.
Niacinamide can maintain the energy balance of the skin, restore cell energy, and accelerate collagen synthesis, thereby preventing the skin from being damaged by low oil content,
Excessive melanin deposition due to thinning of the stratum corneum. In addition, niacinamide promotes the shedding of keratinocytes containing melanin by accelerating skin renewal.

(III) Promote the synthesis of epidermal protein and improve skin texture Niacinamide can promote the synthesis of epidermal protein, enhance the skin's own defense ability, and increase the skin's moisture content. Both of the above-mentioned two British patents have descriptions on the use of niacin or niacinamide in cream formulations. However, the research on niacinamide as a skin whitening ingredient did not end. In 1990, new discoveries were made in the European patent EP0,396,422. Similar to the previous patent, it also emphasizes the need to add UVA protection to the whitening formula containing niacinamide
and UVB sunscreen. However, the patent also emphasizes that 0.1-5% of silicone compounds must be added to the formula to give the product good spreadability, which can prevent the sunscreen from forming micelles and reducing the sunscreen effect, and allow the niacinamide in the formula to be fully and evenly spread out so that it can be fully absorbed and utilized.

What does niacinamide do for the skin?
1. Niacinamide can accelerate metabolism, promote the synthesis of collagen, prevent excessive deposition of melanin, and achieve a whitening effect.
At the same time, it can reduce the deposition of melanin and prevent skin darkening.
2. Niacinamide can control the secretion of oil and at the same time achieve the purpose of shrinking pores.
3. The gel containing 4% niacinamide has an acne treatment effect equivalent to 1% clindamycin gel. Long-term use can have an acne-removing effect.
4. Nicotinamide is a component of coenzyme I and coenzyme II. It plays a role in hydrogen transfer in the biological oxidation respiratory chain. It can promote the biological oxidation process and tissue metabolism, and plays an important role in maintaining the integrity of normal tissues (especially the skin, digestive tract and nervous system).
5. Its deficiency may affect the normal respiration and metabolism of cells and cause pellagra.

Additional information:
Niacinamide is a derivative of vitamin B3 and a recognized anti-aging ingredient in the field of cosmetic dermatology. It has received increasing attention in recent years. Its most important anti-aging effect is to reduce and prevent dull, yellowing and pale skin tone produced in the early aging process.
Of course, niacinamide’s contribution to the skin goes far beyond this. It can also repair the damaged stratum corneum lipid barrier and improve skin resistance.
There are some effects that may be overlooked by people, that is, the deep water-locking effect of niacinamide. Therefore, skin care products containing niacinamide are extremely beneficial to

Strong water-locking and moisturizing effects.
Will using whitening essence during the day make you darker? Not necessarily. It depends on the specific type. Some whitening essences are photosensitive, and you will get a tan if used during the day. Except for photosensitive ones, you won’t get tanned if you use them during the day. Anything containing photosensitive ingredients should not be used during the day.
