How to classify UV levels and how to use corresponding sunscreen correctly

The UV rating or index is the recognized standard measurement of the intensity of ultraviolet (UV) radiation produced by the sun. The UV Index is now part of most daily weather forecasts based on the specific time and geographic location. So, how are UV levels divided?

How to classify UV rays

UV rays are divided into 5 levels. When the UV index value is 0 to 2, it is usually cloudy or rainy, at which time the UV intensity is the weakest, and the forecast level is level one; when the index value is 3 to 4, it is usually cloudy, at which time the UV intensity is relatively weak, and the forecast level is level two; when the index value is 5 to 6, it is usually less cloudy, at which time the UV intensity is relatively strong, and the forecast level is level three; when the index value is 7 to 9, it is usually sunny and cloudless, at which time the UV intensity is very strong, and the forecast level is level four; when the index value reaches or exceeds 10, it is mostly sunny days in summer, at which time the UV intensity is particularly strong, and the forecast level is level five.

UV levels and corresponding sunscreens, how to use them correctly

Level 1 is the weakest

If the skin becomes red after being exposed to the sun for more than 100 minutes, it is within the safe range and generally no protective measures are required.

Level 2 Weak

The skin redness time is between 60-100 minutes, which is within a relatively safe range. You can take some protective measures, such as applying sunscreen with an SPF index of less than 15.

Level 3 Medium

The skin will be sunburned for 30-60 minutes, which is mildly harmful. Please take some protective measures, apply sunscreen with an SPF index of about 15, put up a parasol or wear a sun hat and sunglasses when going out.

Level 4 Strong

Sunburn lasts between 20 and 40 minutes and is harmful to the human body. When going out, you should strengthen protection. It is recommended to apply sunscreen with an SPF index higher than 15, put up a parasol, wear a sun hat, and wear sunglasses. Avoid going out between 10 am and 4 pm, or stay in the shade as much as possible.

Level 5 is very strong

If the skin is exposed to the sun for less than 20 minutes, it will cause serious damage to the skin, eyes and other organs. Avoid outdoor activities as much as possible. When you must go out, be sure to take various effective protective measures, such as applying sunscreen with an SPF index higher than 15, holding up a parasol, wearing a sun hat, and wearing sunglasses.
